Huatulco

We had visited Santa Cruz Huatulco for 2 weeks about 20 years ago when there were only 3 hotels and tourists were still a novelty. What a difference to see it today! All five of its bays have been developed with villas and hotels and different accommodations. They're keeping it low key but I fear it will eventually become as touristy as all the other Mexican stops.
It enjoys a slower, sunnier existence and a magical quality that is largely due to its dry rocky landscape, remoteness, bright southern lights and large indigenous population.

Our tour guide brought us to some special cliffs to hear the "buffalo sounds" (bou-fall'-o). When the water hits the cliffs, there are caves underneath that make the water swish in a manner that produces low, growly sounds, and that's why they call it "buffalo". There are only 3 places in the world that produces this sound, 2 in Mexico and the third in the Great Barrier Reef of Australia.
